How To Get Rid Of Stress And Negativity

You all know how important it is to set goals, to stay focused and to overcome procrastination to reach success. What if you do all this like you should, you have written your goals down, you work on them every day, and still nothing happens? How is this possible? Did you have a close look at your emotions? They can stand in your way and block you!

Emotions play a very important role towards reaching or not reaching your goals. Before defining your goals, you have to get rid of every negative emotion, otherwise they will hold you back sooner or later! They are your worst enemy!

Here I offer you four effective proven techniques to get rid of your negative emotions in order to free your way to success :

1. Write down your Stress

Take a piece of paper and a pen, and write down everything that Stresses you, from the biggest to the smallest things. Really everything! Take your time. Then, crumple that piece of paper and throw it against the wall, with energy and force. Make some noise! You could also cut the paper into pieces and throw them in the garbage bin. Or you may prefer to burn the piece of paper - do that outside! These actions will help you expell the energy of your negative emotions.

When you feel calm again, take another piece of paper and write down the word "stress" in every way possible (small, big, pretty, ugly, tiny, upper case, etc.) and do the same things with it: throw it, cut it, burn it...

Then lighten a candle to purify the room, close your eyes and breathe deeply.

2. Erase your stress

Visualize your stress on a big screen. Imagine yourself in a theatre, alone, projecting a movie with your stress or your miserable situation on the screen.

Then visualize a very big eraser in your hand and see yourself erasing the pictures of your stress. Start in one corner of the screen and keep erasing slowly, bit by bit, all the pictures on the screen, until the screen is empty.

Now project a new movie in which you see yourself managing the situation much better and having the success you long for.

3. Write a letter

Write a letter to a person you are mad at, or to somebody that disappointed you. Write down everything, really everything you ever wanted to say to that person. Don't withhold anything. Go on writing until you feel calm again and you feel you poured everything out.

Burn this letter, or cut it into pieces and throw it away.

This technique will help you to get rid of YOUR emotions, but it will not change other people's behavior. However, by letting go of your negative emotions, it is very well possible that your perception of this person has changed. This will make him/her much more open towards you, when he/she feels that your energy has become less hostile.

4. Get rid of muscular pains

Stress accumulates in your muscles and organs. Your body needs to be relaxed and freed of all this accumulated stress. Take at least 15 minutes a day to relax.

To physically relax and get rid of the muscular tension, you can use different methods, like

massage sessions, several types of sports, body work sessions, osteopathy sessions, meditation, yoga, tai-chi, martial arts, autogenic training of Schulz, relaxation method of Jacobson, etc.

To become familiar with these methods and apply them, you can find out more online or at the library, or consult with professionals that use these methods to restore the physical well-being of their patients.

With your negative emotions out of the way, you will achieve your goals much easier. Whenever negative emotions pop up again, use one of these four techniques to get rid of them, in stead of nurturing them and allowing them to block your way to success!

The Destructive Aspects of Anger

"We are here to encounter the most outrageous, brutal, dangerous and intractable of all passions; the most loathsome and unmannerly; nay, the most ridiculous too; and the subduing of this monster will do a great deal toward the establishment of human peace." Seneca, Roman philosopher, 50 AD

Anger cauuses a bodily reaction. Your sympathetic nervous system and muscles mobilize for physical attack. Your muscles tense and your blood pressure and heart rate skyrocket. Your digestive processes stop. Certain brain centers are triggered, which then change your brain chemistry. When you are angry, your bodily functions change for the worse.

Dr. Charles Cole, Colorado State University, found that the physiological effects of anger can cause blood vessels to constrict, increase heart rate and blood pressure, and eventually lead to the destruction of heart muscle. After studying the reactions to Stress and anger in more than 800 patients, Dr. Cole concluded that every thought has a physiological consequence.

Looking at the effects of anger, Dr. Leo Maddow, chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania, observed that brain hemorrhages are usually caused by a combination of hypertension and cerebral arteriosclerosis. He found that anger can produce the hypertension which explodes the diseased cerebral artery, resulting in a stroke. Not only does anger produce physical symptoms ranging from headaches to hemorrhoids, it can also seriously aggravate already existing physical illnesses. "Someone who stays angry long after the particular incident that caused the anger may be committing slow suicide."

Each episode of anger or hostility sets off a physiological response in your body causing your heart to beat faster, your blood pressure to rise, your coronary arteries to narrow, and your blood to become thicker. When the blood becomes thicker, the heart has to work harder to pump it. For people with heart disease, this reaction can reduce blood flow to the heart, creating a potentially fatal condition.

A study done by Dr. Ichiro Kawachi, of the Harvard School of Public Health, examined about 1,300 older men (average age of 62) over a seven-year period. Dr. Kawachi found that those men with the highest levels of anger were three times more likely to develop heart disease than men with the lowest levels of anger.

Other researchers at Union Memorial Hospital and Loyola College of Maryland in Baltimore interviewed 41 patients who just had angioplasties to unclog arteries. Those who scored highest in hostility (Hostile Type A) were 2.5 times more likely to need repeat angioplasty within the year. Furthermore, contrary to the common advice from friends and therapists to "get it all out" when angry, verbally berating partners or expressing hostility towards other people only serves to compromise Physical Health.

Why Holistic Wellness Programs Could Be The Future of Mental Health and Addiction Treatment

Many leading American non-12-step, holistic treatment centers believe that the future of addiction and mental health treatment must focus on the whole person philosophy and move away from the disease, sickness model so prevalent in today's treatment programs.

Those involved in holistic treatment believe that traditional addiction and mental health treatment primarily promote disease, sickness and a fear-based life where relapse is only a moment away. It appears that 12-Step and disease model programs get poor results, (some report an 80% relapse rate), because they focus their attention on the addiction, depression, behavioral use patterns, etc., and not on the cause of the problem which is the way a client perceives and thinks. Treatment programs today and for the future should alter their protocols to make the primary therapeutic target the "Whole person" Mind-Body-Spirit-EnvironmentĂ‚® wellness approach. Given such an array of complex causes and symptoms in addiction and mental health clients, considering that one approach will work for everyone lacks insight and does the client and field in general a disservice. It is impossible to know what approach a client may latch on to that may change their life in the most profound way. It is important to teach clients to take an approach of well-being to their problems focusing on the thinking that produces the dysfunctional behaviors, as well as a healthy body, a spiritual understanding and an elevated state of awareness.

At holistic center's therapeutic time is not spent on the focus of a drug or alcohol lifestyle or psycho-emotional behaviors and client's past use history. This only serves to reinforce "negative and sickness". Instead, programming focuses solely on the positive and hopeful resolution of client life problems, which include the addictive behaviors and psycho-emotional dysfunction using an empowering and total wellness approach.

"Rehab" is really seems to be on its way out and "life transformation" through total wellness is quickly becoming the lead treatment model in mental health and addiction programming. Many involved in the mental health and addiction treatment industry predict that third party payers on which the treatment industry rely will embrace the wellness protocols and will be more likely to approve coverage for their clients because they will see lower recidivism, less claims and a healthier clientele.

Beat Stress Now! 10 Easy Tips

"Never complain about your troubles; they are responsible for more than half of your income." Robert R. Updegraff

Everyone's busy. Today many of us feel added pressure with fax machines, cell phones, kids and co-workers. The average worker fields 52 phone calls, 36 emails and 23 voice mails a day. And, the holidays and the Stress that sometimes comes with it are fast approaching. Here are 10 quick and easy tips for managing Stress. Please feel free to share them with your friends and colleagues.

1) Focus on your strengths not on your weaknesses. Perfectionists take note: the average American is 32 years old, married, laughs 15 times a day, and has 27 trillion fat cells. Nobody's perfect. Beat stress by going easy on yourself. Focus on your strengths and work on your weaknesses. Don't obsess over your weaknesses because perfectionism often leads to procrastination.

2) Get up in the morning 30 minutes earlier.Start your day with solitude and more clarity by rising a half hour earlier than those in your household. Spend quiet time journaling, praying or meditating. Just begin by writing your thoughts, dreams, goals and fears. Start thinking about how to organize your day.

3) Break the worry habit. 95% of what you worry about never happens. Ask yourself, "Even if the worst happened, what could I learn from this experience?" Have a plan B just in case.

4) Spend time outdoors and out in nature. Especially in fall and winter when the days get shorter, it's important to spend time outdoors every day in the natural daylight. Even if it's gray and overcast, research shows that time spent in daylight, especially in the morning, helps reduce Seasonal Affect Disorder or "SAD." Where I live in the Pacific Northwest, I can actually notice a positive shift in my mood and that of others when late spring arrives and it's light until 8:45 p.m.

5) Remember the formula E + R = 0. Event + (your) Reaction = Outcome. You can't always controls the events or outside circumstances around you, but you CAN control how you react. This isn't a new concept, but sometimes we need to be reminded of it. Most of us spend more time worrying about the things outside of our control. I conducted a speaking engagement recently in Seattle on "Dealing with Difficult People." I reminded everyone of the importance that their response plays in determining their outcomes.

6) Laughter is a serious business! Laugh to reduce stress. It's a well-known fact that laughter helps reduce stress and build the immune system. Laughter IS the best medicine. It gets those endorphins or "feel-good" hormones into the brain and elevates your mood.

7) Don't overreact when dealing with difficult people - especially antagonists. Antagonists, otherwise known as "pot stirrers," often have a desire for dissention. They're looking to purposely rattle your cage, ruffle your feathers, and get you to say something you'll regret. As Zig Ziglar once said, "No one can get your goat if they don't know where it's tied up."

8) Reward yourself for a job well done. Indulge in a massage, manicure or pedicure. Recently I had the glorious pleasure of staying at the Phoenician hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona. Splurging on an hour-plus massage worked wonders! Not to mention laying out by the pool enjoying the beautiful desert scenery of Camelback Mountain, and later, Sedona.

9) Check your adult at the door. Act like a kid again! Play, run, engage in a favorite sport or hobby like golf, tennis, or hanging out with your children at the park. Make sure to have a date night with your spouse or significant other. Take a day off and play at the beach doing something you haven't done in years like playing Frisbee or building sand castles.

10) Cultivate an attitude of gratitude. List 10 things you're grateful to have in your life. Revisit and appreciate the simplest of pleasures. Sip your favorite cup of gourmet coffee. Sit outside in the springtime in the garden of a friend's house. Enjoy sunset on the coast. Appreciate the feeling of being more energized after a workout. Be grateful for your health.

Decide today to make a commitment to do one activity that will reduce stress and maximize success. Do it now. What you do in the present determines your future. Enjoy!

Understanding the Benefits of Gabapentin

Gabapentin is a drug used to help control various kinds of seizures associated with epilepsy. It cannot cure epilepsy, but helps control it and will only work as long as its use is continued. It is also used to treat the pain that occurs after a bout with shingles. Being an anticonvulsant, gabapentin increases a chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. Therefore, conditions within the central nervous system that cause pain can be treated with gabapentin. Generally, less serious pain from minor injuries or arthritis are not treated with this drug.

There are some things to consider before taking gabapentin. If you have any type of an allergic reaction to this drug or any similar drug, you need to let your doctor know. Gabapentin is usually given to people over the age of twelve, although it has been given to younger children for treating partial seizures. Its safety for children under the age of three has not been established, however. There does not seem to be a problem for older patients, unless there are already age- problems with the kidneys. In these cases, an adjustment may need to be made in the amount prescribed. There have not been adequate studies done for women who are pregnant or nursing in regards to this drug, so serious risks should be considered.

People considering this drug should also be aware of drug interactions that may occur. Using gabapentin when taking certain medications or supplements can cause the side effects to be increased. A few drugs or ingredients that should be taken cautiously with gabapentin are supplements containing magnesium, aluminum, and magaldrate. Care should also be taken if you plan to take this drug with alcohol or tobacco. If you have any other serious medical problems such as cancer, depression, Mental Illness or kidney disease, your doctor should know, as gabapentin may make your conditions worse.

Gabapentin comes in three forms - capsule, tablet and liquid - and should only be taken with a full glass of water, usually three times per day. Food is not imperative, although it may help if the medicine upsets your stomach. It is best to take the medication at the same times each day, no longer than twelve hours between doses. Often, doctors will start patients on a low dose to see how they do and slowly increase the amount as needed.

Because this drug works with the chemicals in the brain, the medication should not be stopped right away unless you have a doctor's permission. Otherwise, you could experience serious side effects as your body withdraws from the drug. Even if you experience some side effects, do not make any changes to your schedule until ordered by the doctor. Generally, over a week's time, you will gradually decrease the amount taken to avoid any withdrawals.

Gabapentin, as an off-label drug, has also been used to treat patients with different drug and alcohol addictions. It has been useful for treating migraine headaches, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, menopausal symptoms, tinnitus, restless leg syndrome and chronic pain due to a variety of operations. Many physicians, however, will hesitate to distribute them because the drug is not yet specified to treat some of these conditions. Gabapentin has also proved to be helpful to patients suffering from the numbness and tingling caused by nerve damage due to diabetes, diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

Gabapentin is a powerful drug, so if you are having any surgeries, it is important to let your doctor know beforehand. To avoid any interactions between medication, be sure to let your doctor and pharmacist know if you add any new prescriptions, supplements, herbs, vitamins or medications to your diet. If you forget to take a dose, just take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time to take the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular scheduled dose. You should never double up on your doses.

As with most medications, there are side effects that might occur. Being aware of this will help you to understand what is happening in case you do experience any of these symptoms. The most common side effects of gabapentin are: problems with memory, headache, drowsiness, anxiety, dizziness, and blurred vision. There are other side effects and all of these concerns need to be discussed with your physician and pharmacist.

Gabapentin has truly been a blessing to many people who have suffered with pain, seizures, and other medical conditions. Understanding as much as possible about all medications that you take is very important, so that the drug will truly be able to help you. As more is learned about gabapentin, its side effects and abilities, it will hopefully be able to be approved for treatment of more conditions. In the meantime, it is good to know that a drug has been approved to treat some very serious conditions and help people to live with less pain and illness in their lives.
